Black Soldier Fly: Nourishing the World, Sustainably.

The Black Soldier Fly

Insects, known for their high protein content and nitrogen use efficiency, stand out in comparison to traditional livestock animals. Within the realm of insects, the saprophagous black soldier fly has garnered increasing attention, leading to the establishment of several large-scale farms worldwide. The larvae of the black soldier fly (BSFL) yield protein-rich biomass, serving as valuable feed for fish and livestock animals. Beyond proteins, the fats extracted from BSFL could potentially substitute soybean oil in aquaculture or be utilized for biodiesel production. The residues from BSF production, comprising a mix of rest-substrate and larvae frass, hold potential as soil amendments and plant fertilizers. As a result, the production of black soldier flies can seamlessly integrate into industrial symbiosis models, contributing to circular production systems.
